This is a post I had made in my journal a while back, an analysis of Mai that was followed by a lot of very interesting discussion. I suggest grabbing a cup of tea, getting comfortable in your chair, and reading all of the comments as well as the original post.

I followed the link set in Avatar_fans here, and I loved your (in the plural, since there were so many good points made) theorizing about Mai. I never really thought much about her (or Ty-Lee for that matter) but the discussion on her behavior and emotion-supression, along with possible Zuko/Mai relationship and the discussion that followed on marriage was all very enthralling. I sadly have nothing to add, but you definitely have my brain working.

My IQ just went up, like, three points. That was really, really good; definitely changed my perspective in Mai a bit.

THIS IS WHAT I POSTED IN RESPONSE TO THE MAI DISCUSSION:

Initally, I wasn't keen on Mai too.

She's dull. She's easily bored, even with what she seems to do best and that's killing people.

But I've started to like her. But not with Zuko.

See, Zuko is another bitter soul and he's changed a lot since when Mai liked him.

When Mai liked him, he could barely weild a knife, he fell on his butt while trying to firebend... and he was a sweet, innocent, bashful boy that always got the wrong side of Azula's teasing.

Which has made him and her into what they are today.

Zuko's quiet. So is Mai. There'd be nothing for them to discuss. What are they going to talk about Azula the whole time? I wouldn't think so.

Both Zuko and Mai need loud, friendly counterparts to keep the relationship going.

A bright side to their dark side.

Which is why I pair Zuko with Toph and Mai with Teo.

Teo is the type of boy Zuko was when Mai liked him. Cute, innocent, generally optimistic.

However Zuko has become a hateful pessimist due to Azula, and Mai has too. Mai needs an optimist like Ty Lee to keep her... alive.

Zuko and Mai are alike... but that's what doesn't work. Look at Jin. If she wasn't bold and brash, she would have never gotten a date with Zuko. Mai and Zuko could never get together BECAUSE they're too alike.

That's what I think.

Here's my Teo/Mai fic. See if you change your mind...
